South West Rocks Golf Day: Meet Louise and Jason

Louise and Jason Bear held their first ‘Ovarian Cancer Charity Golf Day’ at South West Rocks Golf Course in 2014, after Jason’s beloved cousin Kylie lost her fight to the disease in 2012, aged just 34.

Three years on, Louise and Jason have raised more than $40,000 for Ovarian Cancer Australia, to ensure other families don’t have to face the same devastating loss they did.

“We decided to host the golf day as Jason is a keen golfer,” says Louise. “We thought this would be a great way to raise funds and awareness while having a good time.

“In 2014, the first year of the event, we aimed to raise $5000. Jason and I worked together to set up and promote the event and got the whole family involved. Parents, relatives and friends were all recruited to do jobs such as manning the BBQs, selling raffle tickets, operating drink carts and seeking sponsorships. Our friends, family and local community were so supportive and we were blown away when we realised we’d raised more than double our original target – $10,500!

“Knowing that the money we raise is going towards research to improve the chance of survival for those diagnosed with this awful disease has driven us to keep making the golf day bigger and better each year. Our hope is that eventually ovarian cancer will be a thing of the past. With this in mind we are upping our fundraising target for the golf day again in 2017– to $20,000.

“People often ask Jason and I for our ‘top tips’ for hosting a successful Afternoon Teal event. I always say community support is key. If you can, approach local businesses in person to ask for contributions. If you can get prizes, food and beverages donated this will have such a great impact on the funds you’ll be able to raise. Also, make sure you enjoy yourself and be willing to accept help. The most important thing to remember is to make it fun!”

Jason and Louise will be hosting their 4th Annual South West Rocks Charity Golf Day on Friday 17 February.

Ovarian Cancer would like to thank Jason and Louise and all our Afternoon Teal supporters for their generosity and dedication to supporting women living with ovarian cancer and their families and funding high-impact research so that one day, ovarian cancer becomes a thing of the past.
